Wombaroo for Woodend

W4W has donated some specialised Wombaroo formula to a carer in Woodend for their kangaroo joey’s Lewis and Macey who are basking in the warm sun and much needed chaff for Harper, Toppy, Kirra, Tippy & Billy who are their soft release kangaroos.

Soft release is a common method that carers use for animals that have been hand raised or rescued from their mother's pouch. As the animal approaches the age where it would be independent in the wild, carers will leave their cage or pen open.

The carer continues to feed the animal, but it is free to come or go as it wants. This method can be used for many birds and mammals including kangaroos, possums, bats and more. While the animal hangs around for a few days, or sometimes a few weeks, as it establishes itself, almost all these animals will eventually choose to live a wild life, even though they could stay and be housed and fed.

This reintroduction technique can help improve the success rate of survival by providing animals with an easier or more gradual transition to the wild.
